Four of the biggest AI companies sat in front of a city council and answered questions about risk.
Not Congress. A city council.
What happened
On October 5, the New York City Council held a hearing on AI risks. Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Meta gave what the Council described as their first public testimony under oath. Fox News reported that the companies stopped short of promising any guarantee of AI safety.
What the Council is weighing
- A whistleblower incentive program.
- A right for people to sue over harm caused by AI agents.
- Independent third-party validation of AI systems.
These are proposals on the agenda. Nothing was enacted at the hearing.
Why it matters if you are not a tech company
If you use AI agents to answer customers, send emails or handle data, you are the one the customer will blame when something goes wrong.
So three habits are worth building now:
- Keep a human in the loop for anything that touches money or customers.
- Log what your AI tools do.
- Know which vendor is responsible for what.
The bigger picture
Regulation rarely starts big. It starts local, then spreads through contracts, procurement rules and vendor terms.
The businesses that treat AI governance as a basic habit, not a legal afterthought, will move faster later.
